melbourne 2am curfew
I quote from: http://www.melbournelockedout.com/
"On the 30th of May at 11pm, we invite you and everyone who cares about Melbourne's unique culture and nightlife to converge on Parliament House steps and make your voice heard against the proposed 2am curfew.
We are putting forward an educated attack on the State government in the form of a registered protest, backed by Melbourne's nightlife community.
This means that we are working with the Victorian Police to ensure safety and maximum exposure.
This is the only registered and therefore official protest for this cause. Attending an illegitimate protest will jeopardise our credibility and potentially have serious and damaging effects on the outcome.
We are working to voice your opinions and thoughts. If you have any Ideas, comments or arguments on the matter please put them in the wall. We read every comment and we will use them as ammunition against the proposed curfew.
This is a formal, non-violent, drug and alcohol free protest: violence, vandalism, and stupidity will not be tolerated!
Any negative press will discredit our protest and will hurt the very cause we are fighting for.
We will be broadcasting our protest arguments over the radio waves, so please bring with you a large battery powered radio boom-box so everyone can hear our voice and so they cannot shut our P.A. system down.
Do not bring: alcohol, drugs, idiotic behaviour, violence or weapons of any sort.
This will result in you being removed from the protest by the Victorian Police, and we will fully support them in doing this.
For more information on the cause, our beliefs and our arguments please visit our Facebook group where all the relevant information is contained:
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=16611626158
To get involved in the organisation of this protest please email the event organisers, as there are plenty of small and large ways you can help: standup2am@gmail.com
Please stay tuned for further updates."
anyone else seen this circulating? true? false? whats your opinions!

I highly doubt this 2am lockout is going to help reduce the binge-drinking and drunken violence problems of Melbourne. If anything, people will just have another excuse to be pissed off and start a fight, and just drink more earlier on in the night.

just heard it on the radio.. so it is for real...
and if anything isnt this going to encourage bars/clubs to be busier earlier on? hence if anything making it EASIER for young people to drink as well? think about it.. "be home by 1" won't be such a big deal for young people... since everything will get busier earlier hence it's still worth going out!

this is bad for business, and i think will backfire on the government. people that leave at 2am that dont want to go home will continue roaming the streets.

People inside the venues will be able to stay until the venue itself closes. It's just those outside of the venues at 2am will not be able to gain entry. Very easy solution: arrive early enough to make sure you're in before 2 am.
Clubbers who go to the more popular venues might have trouble but I'm not overly fussed. It's a 3-month trial, for which I'll be away for over a month. Even if I were here for the entire time, I'm sure I'd barely notice it.

not only that viv, but sometimes people decide to leave a venue and go to another one.
lets say i go to one place to see some mates, but then decide to go to another venue because another group of friends are there, or maybe i want to go see 2 different DJs that are playing in 2 different venues.
What about people who cant make it to a venue untill passed 2am? People that get kicked out from a venue and cant go to another 1? Not everybody drives to the city, what about the people that catch trains and cant get in anywhere after 2? more people on the streets. This is just a quick fix. Brumby is a f.ucking idiot.
This country is becoming a joke, so many laws are being created with out proper thinking. Alco-pop tax is another, fucking idiots. We can afford another few bux to buy a 6 pack of drinks, it isnt going to hurt us, for those who cant afford it, well drugs are going to become the next option. Brumby is a genious. .... not.

Yeah that's true, it's become cheaper to buy illegal substances than legal ones now days. Not saying these drugs have more of a detrimental effect but the fact that this society is so hell-bent on keeping the "real drugs" from "the children" makes it seem like somewhat of a contradiction.
God damn I hate these and all laws like these. Just stripping us of some more freedom. The politicians don't really give a **** about inner city violence, they onyl care about racking up the votes.

There are clubs out there that don't get going until crazy hours of the night/morning. And wouldn't they rather the type that go to those places, be in a secured environment than out on the streets?
It won't work, theres too many negative things about it.
Apparently you can't even go outside for a smoke (if no smoking areas are available at the venue) and come back in.
Some people work til let's say 1 am... then want to catch up with everyone else and have a few drinks but wouldn't be able to.
Its fucked.. The curfew won't stay.

So many businesses are going to loose thousands of dollars in lost revenue because of this. Also, clubs will definitely start to close earlier. Think about it like this, clubs usual start closing once people stop buying drinks, with this 2am curfew, the people inside will be buying a few drinks every now and then, but once they stop, there will be no more new people coming in, then the venue will close. I think you'll find that clubs that use to close at like 5am or later will now start closing more around 3am. I highly doubt people will start going out at like 7-8pm or anything, so everyone's nights will now be getting cut a lot shorter.
I'm interested to know when clubs can start letting people in again. Do the clubs have to actually close before letting people in again? I cbf finding out, so if anyone can shed some light on this...

I was wondering what would happen to clubs like revs, but venues can let people in at 7am.

Circus is only good @ 3-4.

DAMN UUUUUUUUUUUUU.

It'll probably go up to 100 venues being exempt.
I'll have a look but currently confirmed are Prahran's Xchange and La La Land, The Peel in Collingwood, and St Kilda's Cushion Lounge, as well as Crown Casino.

Why were these venues made exempt? Seems pretty unfair to me.

Pretty sure it had to do with problems with the lockout legislation that they were able to exploit. I'm sure more places would've been able to do it if they had more time.
