LAST Tuesday was a memorable day in Gary Duschl's life. After nearly 40 years of lovingly collecting
chewing gum wrappers, Duschl's odd collection finally hit the one million mark.
Duschl, now 52, started the astounding collection as a teenager in Canada and has twisted and braided all one
million wrappers into a chain that stretches more than 13km -- about 3.2km higher than Mt Everest or the height of 29 Empire State Buildings.
The chain has earned Duschl, a general manager of a
small shipbuilding firm, a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. The chain weighs 267kg.
Duschl says that, while he has chewed a fair portion of the gum from which his wrappers came,
many more were donated by supporters of his bizarre quest.
He has received thousands of donations from across the globe and always welcomes more, but stresses that he only uses Wrigley
chewing gum wrappers.
