View Full Version : Big Day Out 2007

I thought I'd start up the next BDO thread now as we're about a couple of weeks away from the first announcement of artists. I also thought that people might want to voice their opinion on where Big Day Out should evolve to over the next few years.
Personally, I hope it stays a rock festival. I don't mind if they put other genres onto a couple of the smaller stages or in the Boiler Room but I don't want the festival to become a hip-hop/RnB/techno festival.
Currently, there are strong rumours that the following artists will be playing at Big Day Out 2007:
Tool
Muse
The Who
The Strokes
Daft Punk
Trivium
There have also been rumours that the following will be coming down:
Gnarles Barkley
Audioslave
Daddy Cool
Courtney Love
Peaches
Alice In Chains
The Killers
AFI
Lostprophets
My Chemical Romance
Bloc Party <--------Big possibility
Stonesour
Angels & Airwaves
The Datsuns
Eagles of Death Metal <-------Big possibility
The Butterfly Effect
Jet <--------Big possibility
Massive Attack
Queens of the Stone Age
Flaming Lips
Basement Jaxx
There has been talk that the majority of the first announcement will look like this:Tool, Muse, Daft Punk, Icehouse, Jet, Eagles of Death Metal, Lily Allen, Trivium, The Sleepy Jackson, Little Birdy, The Presets, Pony Up, Evermore, The Drones.
If this ends up being the case, then it's a pretty good line-up, although it's missing that BIG act that the BDO needs to end the show with.
So yeah...what's your thoughts on the current rumoured list? Who would you rather see at next year's Big Day Out? What do you want to happen to Big Day Out?

I want to see Gnarles Barkley. I heard he's really good live. Also I really want evermore to play I love that band.
EDIT: Sarah, talk properly (WANT, not "wont").

They've been taken off the strong rumours at the moment because they are touring in April so doesn't make the biggest amount of sense, although there's still a possibility. Hope they don't play though. They were absolute crap last time at the BDO.

Melbourne Big Day Out in trouble
NEXT year's Big Day Out festival in Melbourne is in jeopardy, with organisers yet to secure a new venue only two weeks before it announces the line-up and ticket sales.
The festival was held at the showgrounds in Ascot Vale for 13 years before it was forced to move because of renovations. Last year it was held at Carlton's Princes Park.
While the organisers have secured the Flemington Racecourse carpark for 2008, it is seeking assistance from the Victorian Government and the City of Melbourne to find an appropriate site for January 2007.
"We're in a spot of bother, and we're hoping it will be resolved," said co-organiser Vivian Lees.
"We asked the Melbourne City Council and Carlton residents if we could go in as a one-off for this year, and now we're asking if it can be a two-off.
"We staged an excellent show there last year, with minimal complaints. The audience loved it and sports players were back there a week after. But it is not a long term plan for us.
"We've got a very exciting line-up for next year and it would be a tragedy if Melbourne fans missed out."
Each year the event attracts about 45,000 people and employs almost 3000 staff. The 2007 show is expected to be headlined by Tool, Muse and Jet, while the Eagles of Death Metal and Gnarls Barkley have also been rumoured.
Mr Lees said the State Government knocked back a proposal to move the event to Albert Park, and two other possible venues, Calder Park Raceway and Sandown Park Racecourse, were considered too far away.
http://www.theage.com.au/news/music/melbourne-may-not-have-big-day-out/2006/09/20/1158431783222.html
Carlton is supposedly not happy about the condition that the grass was left in last time, that and people parking down side streets etc. Those are the two main problems. I sorely hope Princes Park is given. Will be the biggest bullsh*t iif we don't get the BDO.

I'd sell several of my organs to see Daft Punk live.
Especially after their Coachella set, which was just wow.
They are quite incredible

According to http://www.virtualfestivals.com/, the Melbourne Big Day Out will be held on Sunday 28th January if a venue is found.
Also, according to them:
Muse, The Flaming Lips, The Killers, Jet, Tool and Peaches are being touted as the main acts for The Big Day Out festival tour.
Adding The Killers, The Flaming Lips and Peaches means that the strongly rumoured first announcement of the line-up would look something like this:
Tool
Muse
Daft Punk
Icehouse
Jet
Eagles of Death Metal
Lily Allen
Trivium
The Sleepy Jackson
Little Birdy
The Presets
Pony Up
Evermore
The Drones
The Killers
The Flaming Lips
Peaches
To me that is a strong line-up, needing only one more big act to really go off. I'd pay much more than 1/10 of the entry fee to see Daft Punk. Though if My Chemical Romance get signed onto this festival......then the organisers have lost their way. Take the emo pop sh*t somewhere else. Don't wreck a f*cking good festival with that crap.

i reaaaaaaaalllllyyyyy want to go to bdo next year but only if a few more acts that i enjoy are announced. There are about 4 or 5 pretty decent acts so far, if it hits 7 or 8 then i'm in for shizzzzzz. And ffs Gnarls Barkley is 2 PEOPLE!!! Everyone thinks its one person and tis annoying.... well not everyone but you know. SIKENTS!

^^^Don't most know they are two people?:|
I liked it better at Showgrounds...:(
OMG ICEHOUSE...I love them...It's like my childhood music. Why are they there? Am I missing something?
Though if My Chemical Romance get signed onto this festival......then the organisers have lost their way. Take the emo pop sh*t somewhere else. Don't wreck a f*cking good festival with that crap.
Um... It's pretty much turned into...something..nevermind.
I'd definietly go if I was guarenteed it wouldn;t be hot. But it's usually hot and I can't deal with heat. I end up not being able to enjoy anything because all I want to do is find shade.

Just some new stuff to post up:
Last night on TV3 news in New Zealand The Killers themselves said in an interview that they were playing at the Big Day Out 2007! Tool has also been confirmed by their guitarist in an interview on the radio. Peeping Tom has also said they will be going.
With the Killers saying they are confirmed, the rumoured line-up is looking quite accurate. I'm extremely happy to see Peeping Tom being "confirmed" (can't actually check the accuracy of this, though) for the Big Day Out. I'm extremely glad that I might actually be able to see Mike Patton live.
The inclusion of Peeping Tom might be a big reason for why the Red Hot Chilli Peppers dropped out, as Anthony Kiedis and Mike Patton have been at odds for a very long time. A few years ago when Mr. Bungle were rumoured to play at the Big Day Out, apparantly Anthony Keidis said something to the effect of "if Mr Bungle play, we don't." This was not the only festival that Keidis made this threat, so it is very reasonable to believe that if Peeping Tom are in next year's line-up, they would be part of the reason RHCP aren't.
If Peeping Tom come down, then the strong rumours of The Who might be extremely accurate as Peeping Tom has been opening for The Who over the last few months.
There have also been rumours that Audioslave will be at the festival. Morello, their guitarist, said that Audioslave intended to tour Australia soon, maybe for the Big Day Out. There was also a hilarious rumour claiming that Morello had said that the members of Rage Against the Machine were going to do a two-month reunion tour, starting at the New Zealand Big Day Out. Hell, if that happened I would go but it's very doubtful :D.
I was already willing to pay the ticket price for next year's Big Day Out, yet if The Who, Peeping Tom and Audioslave also come down, then I would be more than willing to pay much more to go to the 2007 BDO.

Tickets were $110-$120 +bf this year. Don't know why there was a range but I was just reading through the press releases to check it and saw the two different prices. Might have had something to do with the Sydney Big Day Out.
Melodie usually goes into hiding at this point, doesn't she? I'm guessing that she'll e-mail you within the next fortnight telling you about the first announcement.

No, they haven't said when the tickets will start being sold. Ticketek usually does the New Zealand and Brisbane BDO, while Ticketmaster do the rest.
Then you've got other outlets like Polyester, Greville and others who sell them in the shop.

Here is the first press release from bigdayout.com:
Australia Press Releases
Official Official 1st Announcement
Midnight 3/10/06
Welcome to the official... official 2007 Big Day Out first announcement.
(for NZ Press Release click here)
Now that everyone has had their fun & had a go at their own announcements’ it is finally our turn. That is of course if you believe that this is the actual official first announcement.
So for those of you who are true believers read on.....
We hoped you liked the show in 2006: wasn’t Iggy great?
For us it’s not just about great music but offering a great experience as well. Not only for the audience but the bands and of course the team that makes the shows a reality.
2007 will be the 15th year of the BDO. Over that time we have witnessed amazing performances from artists ranging from the obscure to the megastars. We of course intend to continue that tradition.
That said, we felt it was time to turn up the volume for 2007.
A big show also means you need to take extra care of each other, pace yourself, play safe and get home in one piece. Please don’t forget about the getting home safely part of the day.
So, no more lectures, it’s meant to be fun.
The first announcement packs a lot of punch and we would recommend buying your tickets early. Rest assured, the second and third announcements will only reconfirm your decision.
So lets get to the actual real official, official first announcement.
BIG DAY OUT 2007 will host the heaviest modern metal experience of all, TOOL. After 15 years of breaking, shaking and earthquaking new musical ground, TOOL topped the charts in 2006 with their latest unique melding of art, prog and metal, 10,000 Days. With an unmercifully heavy set that reaches back over a decade to the still staggering Sober, BIG DAY OUT 2007 will feel the earth move under its feet as TOOL rumble and roar into life.
In the summer of 2004, JET wowed BDO audiences with blistering sets showcasing their worldwide smash debut Get Born. Sure, it was only rock‘n’roll, but we liked it! In 2007, JET return to the BIG DAY OUT stage with their new effort, Shine On, a rollicking LP jam-packed with rootsy Delta blues, British hard-rock and Everly Brothers inspired harmonies. Expect a show packing a swaggering rock‘n’roll punch as a new light shines on JET at the BDO.
Direct from outer space, BIG DAY OUT 2007 is thrilled to welcome the most thrilling operatic sci-fi carnival on the face of the earth, MUSE. The fuel powering this prog rock missile from Mars is Black Holes and Revelations, a No.1 album around the world, and a showcase of a band at the top of their game – a game no one else has ever dared dream of playing. In 2007, BIG DAY OUT will be ridiculous, overblown, ambitious and utterly brilliant – all thanks to the one and only MUSE.
In the beginning, there was the BIG DAY OUT. And in the beginning of the BIG DAY OUT, there was VIOLENT FEMMES. Fifteen years after they folk-punked the BIG DAY OUT into existence alongside some little band called Nirvana, VIOLENT FEMMES are back to reclaim what’s rightfully theirs. BIG DAY OUT 2007 will ring to the sounds of the FEMMES classics that have become part of the rock’n’roll fabric: Add it Up. Blister in the Sun. Kiss Off. Gone Daddy Gone. Gimme the Car. American Music… VIOLENT FEMMES at BIG DAY OUT: a rite of passage no self-respecting music fan can miss.
When SCRIBE first stepped up to ask the question “How many dudes do you know flow like this?” in his smash hit Not Many, this young New Zealand rapper was setting out on a crusade to bring a new flavour to the international hip-hop scene. The real deal alternative to gun-toting, bling-laden cash hip-hop, SCRIBE’s powerful stage presence, hard hitting, hook-laden rhymes are irresistible and have inspired all corners of the hip-hop community to wax lyrical.
BIG DAY OUT 2007 is buzzing about the arrival of the best band to come from anywhere, ever – THE KILLERS. The Las Vegas band, led by the “knicker-wettingly debonair” Brandon Flowers, sold 5 million copies of their debut album Hot Fuss, and delivered some of the best singles of the 2000s so far: Mr. Brightside, Somebody Told Me and Smile Like You Mean It. Now comes the new album, Sam’s Town, and a live show renowned for causing mass singalongs and hormonal hysteria. With the coming of THE KILLERS, BIG DAY OUT 2007 is going to be, well, killer.
Everyone’s favourite Fremantle prodigies ESKIMO JOE run away to join the BIG DAY OUT circus this summer with their third album Red Wine and Black Fingernails in tow. With throbbing drums, warm keyboard atmospheres and ethereal guitars, the Eskies are wildly charismatic showmen with sex appeal to boot. Not afraid of a little rock‘n’roll they are not to be missed at BDO 2007.
BIG DAY OUT 2007 gets back in black with the coming of MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE. Beloved by black-clad music fans everywhere for their incendiary hits I’m Not Okay (I Promise), Helena and The Ghost of You, MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE are set to leave the pretenders choking in their dust with their new, epic concept album The Black Parade. Led by an iconic performer in Gerard Way, MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE will put the pomp and punk pageantry into BIG DAY OUT 2007.
BIG DAY OUT 2007 has a warm, fuzzy feeling now that PEACHES is returning to rub us up the right way. The self-made, self-produced, do-it-yourself leader of the electro punk movement and high priestess of the dirty lyrical classic comes armed with her third album, Impeach My Bush. Having let this Canadian whirlwind have her way with us several times before, it is with a sense of exhilaration and palpable danger that BIG DAY OUT 2007 announces the return of PEACHES.
EVERMORE have come a long way since the initial release of their impressive album debut Dreams; after a phenomenal season of touring on the live circuit, winning hearts in Oz and overseas, the three Hume brothers picked up a swag of awards and found themselves with a multi-platinum selling record. In 2006 EVERMORE have returned with a new album Real Life and we welcome them to the BIG DAY OUT for the first time, to deliver their dynamic rock, melodic harmonies and uplifting lyrics.
Get ready to shake ya ass. SPANK ROCK will bring the party, the rhythms and the raunch to BIG DAY OUT 2007. Hyped by DJs from Freq Nasty to Laurent Garnier, some call SPANK ROCK the figureheads of a sound known as Baltimore Club. We just call ‘em funny, catchy, clever, fearless and most of all, innovative. Representin’ their debut set, YoYoYoYoYo, Baltimore’s SPANK ROCK will be doing fresh, funky and filthy things with hip hop at BIG DAY OUT 2007.
Masters in the business of making music to lift the soul, Perth’s rock‘n’roll genius THE SLEEPY JACKSON return to play the BIG DAY OUT in 2007. With a vision unmatched in modern pop, The Sleepies have the ability to carve out nuggets of pure musical gold; from sublime acid-country to Who-like power pop, they deliver it all. Get ready for songs from their new album Personality: One Was a Spider, One Was a Bird, a heady concoction of sumptuous symphonic beauty, strings and massed choirs included!
Inspiring anticipation, awe and respect all at once, THE HERD has a reputation for fiery, electrifying live shows. With an unconventional line up, THE HERD take to the stage as an eight-piece outfit with three MC’s and two singers. With stage antics that turn the fun up to eleven, THE HERD will get the crowd grooving in flow-motion from the outset. Touring for the first time in 2007, catch them at a BIG DAY OUT near you.
Oozing excitement and an unparalleled energy with everything they do, Melbourne all-girl three-piece THE SPAZZYS bring their brash three-chord power chaos back to the BIG DAY OUT this summer. Since arriving to tear up the scene with their vibrant Ramones-esque punk pop rock, the band has kicked formidable amounts of arse! Don’t miss their red hot performance.
Stay tuned for our next announcement, when we reveal the latest additions to amplify your summer of music.

OMFG TODAY WAS SOOO AWESOME!!!
heres every detail
started off 11 am, kicked back at the blue stage, there were these japanese beatboxers (afra and the incredible beatbox band), they were terrfic, they produced some classic trance anthems so i got my rave on lol
after that i went to the orange stage, next door and kicked back while the sick puppies played, very energetic music and an enthusiastic crowd, not my typ though, i just kicked back while a couple of my mates were moshing =/
after that i headed over to boiler room; saw local djs andee frost and blueprint spin some nice tracks.
then i headed to the green/essential tents, saw bob evans play, pretty good. then dan kelly and the alpha males came on, quite satisfactory, they were good i liked them "nothing but a cocksukkerrr mutherackerr". after that triviuum came on, not too fond of them but i just stayed to get good position for the vines which were alright, little birdy which was good and FINALLY! KASABIAN; who were fucking off the hook! long awaited to seem them play such a great act! i skipped eskimojoe n evermore cause i've seen them live too many times, franky its getting boring
after that i headed back to blue/orange stage, to meet up with my mates who finished with MCR :sarc: so ye we re-grouped and kicked back in the grass and let johnny butler work his magic. quite soothing.
then THE KILLERS came on <3 MARVERLOUS! love them they worked up quite a show
what can i say, jet followed, terrific stuff from them but it was too similar with the MPH concert so i wasnt too enthusiastic
following them, MUSE! omg! so good, highlight of the night they worked up tthe best crod, everyone was jumping about 9 people got kicked out for crowd surfing, just too much talent
soon as that finished i raced to the boiler room the catch THE PRESETS! i love these guys, first time i saw them live they are fabulour, my highlight of the night, such great work from them well done

Alright, here's my incredibly detailed recap of yesterday.
Yesterday, woke up at 9:30, ready to leave my house at 11, so I'd get into the Big Day Out at around 12:30, so I could catch The Herd set. However, at that point I was going in alone because my sister didn't want to go anymore and told me she wanted to get rid of the ticket the night before. I decided to miss The Herd, Lily Allen, DJ Mark Murphy and called up Adi to tell him that I could wait for him to get to my house until 3ish if he still wanted to come because I didn't want to miss seeing Peaches & Herms.
So Adi got to my house at 3, trained into the city, trammed up, got in quite easily and we saw Sneaky Sound System playing early at a different stage, so we thought they must just be filling in for DJ Mega B*tch and then doing another set at Lilyworld. So we went into the Boiler Room and watched until just before halfway into Peaches & Herm before we decided to just check out the grounds. As we passed the Lilyword, we saw that Sneaky Sound System had actually been moved, so we raced back to see the end of their set, which was Pictures. Have to say, Connie Mitchell has done wonders for their live act in comparison to what they were.
So after that, we decided we were hungry, so was heading towards food stalls when we met up with a friend of ours with her mates. Awesome chick, loves Muse and Radiohead but ruins it all by liking MCR. Anyways, after the brief meeting, got a burger and sat down to eat it, when the members of Sneaky Sound System walked by. Had a nice little chat with the blonde member, just talking about how it was a good set and about our burgers. :D Straight after that conversation, You Am I also walked by, so I was f*cking happy :D
Anyways, after the burgers, we toured the grounds, getting our drinking wristbands, checking out the sh*thouse family band Dynamo, before heading back to the Boiler Room to hear DJ [Love] Tattoo. Holy sh*t was he good. Great set, awesome music, some awesome dancers near the front of the stage and you have got to love the bass :D Saw the very start of The Streets before heading off to grab some merchandise stuff (got me a Wristy (Wristband/Cooler/Pocket/Patent Pending :D) and also a Big Day Out hat) before going back to see some of Afra and the Incredible Beatbox Band, who sounded pretty average for their like fourth performance of the day.
So we walked out of Lilyworld and saw the Lilyworld bus playing some music and driving through the grounds, with people dancing behind and around it. Decided to follow it, as it stole people from the Jet crowd and when it finally finished moving near the food stalls, there were so many people dancing. Seriously, if any of you have seen the Dance Space ad on the ex-Club V, you'll know exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about.
Anyways, back to the acts, saw the start of You Am I before grabbing some food and heading over to the Orange Stage to try and get a good spot for Muse. As Brwa said, F*CKING MUSE!!! They were incredible! Definite highlight of the night! It's no wonder they get voted the best live act so many times because they were incredible. If only they would f*cking play Citizen Erased and stuff from Showbiz, then I would have gone mental! But to hear Plug In Baby, New Born, Feeling Good, Stockholm Syndrome and Hysteria live *drools*.
Anyways, as Knights of Cydonia started playing we started moving across to get a good view of Tool playing. So Muse finished, the Hand of God started firing....fire out (so much flame!!!) and Tool eventually came on 10 minutes late. You can tell their fans love them and the crowd was going nuts, but for me it was an anti-climax after Muse and I couldn't get into them, so Adi and I left for The Presets.
The Presets were f*cking awesome and they really went well.
Unlike Brwa though, I could be f*cked and stayed to what The Crystal Method and THEY WERE SO F*CKING GOOD! They played such an awesome set. It was great that they also played some other people's stuff in there, Song 2 went off as well as Banquet. However, their own stuff, like Trip Like I Do, the Blade theme and Born Too Slow also went OFF!!! Was great to finally see them after so many years of not being able to.
The only slight sh*tty part was when I lost Adi, couldn't get onto him and when I finally did, missed the last two tracks of their set leaving the Big Day Out because Adi said he was outside the main entrance. Unfortunately, Adi wasn't there and he eventually came out, found me, and told me that he meant the main entrance to the Boiler Room *smacks head*.
Anyways, I met some people Adi had made friends with whilst we were apart and then we made our way back via public transport, got some Maccas from Elsternwick and then went home to sleep :)
I have pictures and videos but can't be f*cked uploading them yet.
Yet that was my awesome Big Day Out day :p
