Hey guys, I'm having a bit of trouble with the speakers on my computer. Whenever i try to play any songs or sound files in WMP or whichever program i am using this comes up
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.
My speakers are on (the little red light comes up!)and they are installed. I've tried using different speakers aswell and it just tells me the same thing. Any help would be great!!
Thanks!

Use your control panel and look for "add new hardware" the computer might not have detected that you have speakers :-s

Dunno if this'll work, but its worth a shot.
Control Panel --> Sounds & Audio Devices --> 'Audio' tab.
Under 'Sound Playback' it should be listing the device/driver its using. try selecting another one if there IS another one
or..
COntrol Panel --> System --> 'Hardware' tab --> Device Manager
go down to Sound, video and game controllers. nothing should have an exclamation mark on it (if it does, try right clicking it, then 'disable', then right click and enable it again).
EDIT>
And if that doesnt work, and stick or gabbo cant help you, then try
Google (http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=%22There+might+not+be+a+sound+device+installed+on+your+com puter%22&meta=)
theres usually at least 100 people out there with the same problem, and lots of solutions.

Nsonic - Under the Audio Tab the Sound Playback was like faded or something and i couldnt click on anything but it did say that there were no sound devices (would that mean my speaker arn't actually installed?).

You're sound card drivers are fucked. If you've got an onboard ac'97 sound card it's either made by realtek or c-media I believe.
Goto the website for your motherboard, Ie; if it's an asus board www.asus.com.tw. Find the model number of your board, goto the downloads section of the site, look for your motherboard and then download the latest drivers and install.
Restart, sound should work. It has nothing to do with your speakers or the software you are using to play media files.

alternatively you could find the driver CD that was bundled with your motherboard/computer and install the drivers from that

Always better to have up to date drivers.

You relax. Chris was just under the impression that the account was just a new account for an already banned member, but that has been cleared up.

that's true, but using the driver CD solves the problem of which motherboard and which soundcard, which can take a while to find out - and from that the updated drivers can be located more easily, and pleasantly while you listen to music through the sound card

I have a problem with my speakers that may be similar to this situation but I am not sure. I can't hear anything on my speakers when im using programs or playing music but when i do this thing to check if my speakers are working i can hear the music for a split second( like maybe 2 tenths of a second) and then i can't hear it again. I tried using differnt speakers and also tried with my headphones but they dont seam to help. I was thinking that it was either my sound card or sound drive (I am not as avdanced with computer's as you guys so I would appreciate ther constructive critisicm) :D
Thanks guys

i had this sort of thing with my old crap box and the problem was that there was no accutal sound card on the motherboard.. now almost all new mobo's have intergrated sound which means the sound card is built into the mobo..
but however if u don't have this i you could most probably pick up a a sound card for <$10 and i hav seen a 4.1 sound card for $19 at msy

Well, I don't think people who have had sound come out of their speakers before, have the same problem as you.
