If u wana go pro and get gigs and stuff u must be very good since there are ALOT of good dancers out there.
If u think u got the skill u should make urself known. Go to Dance comps at clubs and stuff. Theres a few hiphop comps out there....
Round2 is coming up its got hiphop and breakdance battles i can give u info on it if ur interested.
Also sometimes (rarely) new music poeple are looking for dancers to dance in there video clips though most of the time u dont require skills as they basically teach u the moves, depending on the judges. They normally have auditions and each person dancers infront of a camera and everyone else that is auditioning and they pick the dancers that they think will best suit the video clip.

Yay go spastic Pete... are you going to enter Round 2? Jono was telling me he was thinking about it :O ...
We should all just go down and check it out anyway like the old days :)

Oh and my favourite style of dance would have to be Popping/Locking... it's old style but it's so much better than the new day hip hop stuff.. that's getting annoying. I mean there's so many imitations out there now, they should've stopped at Honey... You Got Served got repetitive and it seems nearly every girl i know that at least likes RnB music does hip hop dancing, it's like "WOAH CALM DOWN!"...

I am (kind of?) a breaker, but I'm not very good yet, ie I can do a few small things on top of footwork, like worm and L-kick, that's bout it....
*hangs head in shame*

And in answer to the other questions...
Fav place to dance: got a pretty good spot at school (yes school), like this foyer place outside the assembly hall, loads of space no obstacles, best place I have access to outside clubs
Have danced on and off, not seriously for about a year and a half, and almost daily for about a month. Needless to say, I've improved more in that last month than in all the time before it.
Most embarassing time dancing: Kandi @ F-four, got into the circle, was gonna do 'hydros' so I got into a handstand, and kicked some poor girl behind me. Left the circle VERY quickly.
Awesome experience: Had to be showing off at my cousins wedding, lol. I knew like two moves then, but it was two more than everyone else

Hey Sonia,

I was told that i had skills to go far..... so i attempted and have worked hard to be succesful quietly. I check the paper for audtions, got into a movie, and dance through my dance school. At my dancing ppl are always talking bout work etc and i try to get info out of them. Im trying out for commonwealth games dance and im also going for a future role in an up and coming music artist.

The problem with dancing is that unless your a ballerina, there isnt much work other than musicals and video clips, which can be ard to get into. But keep trying and accept rejection. ve had a few knockbacks, an ive watch crap people get through, but your time will come.

Make sure you can dance all genres, have technique and teach yourself to pickup routines in the blink of an eye......... thats what the buisness i about.... the brightest. Also make sure that you are able to sing or act, or both because these are valuable on your CV.

Hope ive helped, and mak sure your with a good dance company

So as you can see i've done a fair bit. At the moment i'm mainly doing the hip hop class to get more ideas for poping/locking, but i don't really train, and can't really be bothered so i just stick with what i've got really.

Hahaha, us ballet peoples call calesthenics, calespastics because it looks so weird...and non graceful and...its weird. Not saying it doesnt require skill. Just saying.

I've done ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, contemporary, irish and character since i was 2/3. This year is the first year I havent done regualr classes. I've done a few classes of hip hop but that's it. That's like 15 years of my life....Oh god. Most I did was about 12 hours a week or something.
I liked contemporary and jazz most and hip hops ok too. COntemporary because it's weird and free and you can do cool floor work and it's about experimenting. Jazz because I love that it's technical but also i like the freedom of it compared to ballet. Hip hops just fun...

I miss dancing and need to go back into it. I miss going en pointe too....*sniffle*

I also shuffle..but that doesn't count.

I've wanted to learn how to break dance for about 5 years and I really wanted to get into cheerleading...but Im over it. Im too fat to be a dancer. :)

I dance... I started when I was 3 quit when I was 7 started again when I was 12 and havent stopped since. I do jazz, tap, musical theatre, some ballet, I did hiphop until our teachers all turned pro. You might of heard of them, Israel (who now sings), Joel De Carteret and JD. Lots of fun. I would love to be pro one day, A dream turned to reality would be a dream come true!

calisthenics does require alot of skill and it depends what age group and division you watch because im in div 1 (1 lower than champ which is highest)
and it is very VERY graceful in some items and snappy in the rest...it takes skill because it unique and requires alot of different talents not just 1 like ballet

heidi
28th November, 05, 09:15 PM
Ballet requires way more than just 'one talent'. Just because it's not simply broke up into neat little sections.

My friend was in the state team with a lot of my other friends being in pretty high levels, so it';s not like I haven't seen much...besides I know it\'s hard.. god, I just don't find it that aesthetically pleasing to watch at all

4) Swing your arms as if slapping someone

I like the ballet...really i do, it may seem g@y to you, but i acctually enjoy it.

Anywho, liquid popping aint that hard, well i picked it up very quickly...but meh. Only problem with mine is it's too fluid in a sense. I find it flows too well and people miss what is happening. Also i don't use much style, mainly cos i cbf thinking of anything.

Terence, if we both go to the MU meet-up, i'll show you what i know. Hopefully you'll be able to pick it up. But most people i try to teach don't find the co-ordination very easily and tend to just give up. But once again, it's all about patience.

I think my shuffling has gotten slightly better now, post Earthcore. I shall invest in fattys, when i have the chance... :D

turkey_poppin89
29th November, 05, 11:03 PM
Hmm, well with liquid, I can make the liquid motions with my arms etc., but I just can't seem to make anything of it. I pretty much find myself just doing the same cycle over and over, or just doing the movements with every part of my body at once and it doesn't flow.
Anyway with breaking, I've definitely improved my footwork; it actually looks like footwork now, haha. I seem to have lost my hand hops though. Before I could manage about 3-5 hops on average, but now I keep losing my balance and bailing...quite frustrating

Um....have you done ballet?
It requires a lot of strength, endurance, balance, flexibility, stamina, co-ordination. Ballet dancers have the highest pain tolerance because you have to put up with so much.
Some ballet is boring to watch, but it depends on personal preference. it helps having a background in ballet when watching it because you know how much skill is reuqired to do stuff which they do that looks really easy.

Ballet requires way more flexibility than break dancing...

Edit: oh yeah I actually really wanna learn pole dancing. It looks so fun and it requires heaps of strength and flexibility.

Nah I haven't done ballet.
With the pain tolerance, I reckon breakers have more pain tolerance because with some power moves they put all their bodyweight onto their wrists, forearms and neck whilst ballet dancers mostly do moves/routines which have them on their feet so the most painful thing for them would be having their body weight on their toes.
I reckon both breakin and ballet require the same amount of flexibilty because some ballet moves/routines do some flexible stuff breakin doesn't do and breakin does some flexible stuff ballets doesn't do (hollowbacks, some freezes, flares).

turkey_poppin89
30th November, 05, 08:39 AM
I'd actually have to agree with Heidi on the flexibilty part. The only widely used break moves I know of that require above average flexibility, are hollowbacks and the like. Then of course there's the freaky people like Rubberlegs who do flares with one leg behind their head. Still that's only a small percentage of the people who break.

On pain tolerance, I'd say breakers are pretty close, if not equal to ballet dancers. If you've ever tried a suicide (dropping straight onto your back) from a handstand/hollowback/whatever, you'll know what I mean. I tried it once, but never again

not ONLY that, i mean it's stupid to make a refernece to a movie but Centre Stage. That stuff that happens in the movie is quite realistic so most girls and guys are put under the pressure to stay at an "anorexic" level WHILE they have to be strong (without breaking their fragile bodies) etc etc.
as well as comparing breaking to ballet... you can compare it all you want but in my opinion, both have to have some kind of difference when your talking about physical factors strength, endurance, balance, flexibility, stamina, co-ordination. If they were requiring exactly the same thing, the dance styles wouldn't be different. but thats my 2 cents. ;D

If i had no idea then why did u put in your post:
"It requires a lot of strength, endurance, balance, flexibility, stamina, co-ordination" after my:
"u need heaps of balance, flexibilty and some areas strength"
..... seems like both quotes are quite the same. If I have no idea then u'll have to disagree on my quote since people that have no idea are usually wrong.

Anyone that competes at a high level of anything is put on a high amount of pressure whether it be sports or dancing.

I've never done ballet, but my mum was a ballet teacher and i think i would be the best to comment. As for pain, i think ballet wins that, my mum used to always have bleeding toes and cramps in her feet. Where with my experience in breaking, there's nothing that painfull. Holding your body weight on one wrist doesn't hurt, headspins don't hurt (except if you do it without any headgear, cos then it rips out your hair :)), windmills only hurt when you're not doing them properly (but the pain isn't much), flares and general handstands don't hurt. The only thing i can think of that would hurt as much from breaking is dislocating your shoulder, which happens quite a lot.

As for flexibility, i think they are about even, although with ballet flexibility is a requirement for every move, where in breaking, it is only required for some of the moves.

Overall your average ballet dancer would endure more pain and be more flexible than your average breaker. But unlike ballet, breakers can specialise in certain ares, i.e. power, style, etc. So at the highest levels they are about even.

~SionA~
30th November, 05, 03:40 PM
thats why i liek calisthenics because its not really pain apart from muscles and knees and head in freearm and its extreme flexibility...(much more so than ballet)...and being 8 different items you can specialise in MANY different things

turkey_poppin89
30th November, 05, 08:51 PM

All I can say to that is....ouch..

With breaking, I guess the pain only comes into it when you **** up a difficult move. One wrong placement can end in dislocating something or other, or fracturing something depending on the surface you're doing it on. I was doing a backspin a couple of days ago, rolled my shoulder on the wooden floor....not cool. So ballet dancers would probably endure more pain in the actual performing of the routine, but it's also really easy to injure yourself in breakdancing.

You're joking......right? Otherwise I would advise you to get your head checked...then go watch some proper examples of each of those styles. Seriously....wtf? :|

PHATTYS ALL THE WAY just no kiddies that cant dance wearin them lol

calisthenics is like gymnastics only it includes acting, dancing and singing

Um thanks for telling us?
We've been over that.
Besides it's not really 'like gymnastics' at all.
That's like saying cheerleading is like gymnastics.

you could say cheerleading requires the same amount of flexibility as gymnastics. Or some serious cheerleaders put saults and flips in their routines which is like floor work gymnastics. Same with breakin, some gym moves have been incorporated into breakin and vice versa.
I duno much bout calisthenics so i won't comment.

Your avatar scares me

That's the thing a lot of dance styles incorporate forms of other things, but ti doesn't make it 'like' them.
I know it's nitpicky, I just think saying gymnastics and calisthenics are like each other is weird.

Breaking uses a lot of gymnastics stuff like flares, saults and flips like Hakan said, but it's not necessarily similar.....and you'll never get me into tights....*shudder*
