When I ask anyone what DJing is about, I’m sure they’ll find it something along the lines of, someone who mixes tunes to keep a crowd entertained and dancing, a large skill of being able to DJ comes from the ability to read a crowd and play the music that the crowd likes. If you manufacture a set then such a thing just isn’t possible and you will never go anywhere as a DJ. That was just FYI for the up and coming small rant.

I entered club QBH alone after visiting my friendly punk friends in the park and bumping into Amy & Kandy outside, behind the decks was a face I’d never seen before. I was standing under the circular balcony much enjoying a blend of rather commercial house, when Robbie P came over to say g’day. I asked him who was playing and he said it was DJ Fusion. I thought fair enough, Grumpy made a good choice in hiring him. After a little bit more DJ Merx comes over to me to say hello, then he says to me “Have you seen his sheet?”. ‘Sheet?’ I wondered. So I was explained to that there was a sheet with the songs, the exact pitch levels and the exact second that the songs would be mixed into each other sitting right next to him. That’s not DJing, that’s manufacturing a play list, it’s no different to bringing in a pre-recorded mix CD and just playing that. I do appologise for that rant and I hope that if DJ Fusion reads this he doesn’t take it as a personal attack, just some advice for future gigs.

I was then offered to go upstairs with Merx (I know what you’re all thinking ;))… TO MIX!! So we mucked around for awhile mixing up some RnB tunes, and afew DJ Merx remixes and re-edits too, and I have to say, this boy is well on his way to being huge! After a little we were also blessed with the presence of Ines, Berri, Bianca, Mikey C, & Rob. Then if the envy of being in Merx’s presence wasn’t enough, Dean K then enters the room, jeans ripped and elbow wrapped in bandage, still with a smile on his face, and I had to stand away from the decks before I stuffed up and made a fool of myself. We then listened to Dean K scratch it up for a little while before Berri begged him to show her a thing or two about DJing, so he let her scratch for a little too.

Then we all got rather excited to see that Joe Sofo was on the decks in the main room so myself and Ines ran downstairs to grab his ass… I mean… say hello. He was also giving the crowd some RnB beats before then going into some commercial house, then picking up the pace and doing what he does best, bangin’ :D. Best tune he played was Paul Van Dyk Vs. JPS – Found An Angel, going back back back to the days of KixFest. I was dancing along side Ines & Josie and I noticed while standing there that I believe there were more girls staring at Josie on stage then there were boys.

By this time they’d opened the RnB room and most of the upstairs area and it was looking rather packed, with smiles all around. Next onto the decks was QBH’s on King MC/DJ Paul B feeding the crowds desire for top tunes, and people from Fox FM feeding the crowds desire for easter eggs. Then I saw a blast from the past that I didn’t expect… POY!!!!! I got rather excited and didn’t wish to let go of hugging her. She was looking stunningly gorgeous as she always does and she seemed to be having a great time .

For personal reasons I then went with Ines & Josie (thanks to Mikey) up into the R’n’B room to enjoy Merx’s set for the next two hours. I know I said it before and I probably sound like an ass kisser but really, this man can rock a crowd! Not just with mixing skills, but also some choice scratching with his DJ Triangle Scratch Sample Record :P. But the room was packed and the crowd was bouncing. He even let me have a mix now and again, I liked my first mix, mixed in a remix of Ride With Me and it was good. Second mix in was Merx’s remix of Ain’t No Fun, I FUCKED IT UP!!!!!!! And I was then in a bad mood for a good while and refused to touch the decks. Yes I’m sorry my avid fans, I really do suck at DJing and should be kicked in the shins. I spent most of the time chilling with Ines & Bianca, but towards the very end Erryn actually made her way into the room for a little bit of a dance.

Soon the time came around to close up and we all entered back into the main arena to hear the sounds of Dunken Munkey – E being blasted across the speakers by DJ Phil G. He kept it going hard for a little while before he went into more RnB to clock off the night.

All in all I had a good time, although certain bits about the night weren’t too enjoyable, and perhaps a bit more crowd quality control is in order? But it was still fun. 7.5 out of 10. And we’ll all be back again for next holidays.
