Now I know not many people here will care but I'm gonna do it anyway 'coz I'm bored and not ready for the good 'ole sleep thing yet...
I was just thinking about how we decide which musicians are more deserving than others of our respect...and yeah it seems to me there are a number of ways we can decide this, each of which have at least one band representing it here.
ABBA recorded songs which everyone knows, and, love them, hate them, grudgingly dance to them - whatever - they have endured in people's minds for maaaaaany years.
NOFX have been around pretty much since the demise of the 1st punk wave and, if it wasn't for them, punk might not still be around today. They've carried a whole genre of music for more than 20 years.
Nirvana wrote three of the biggest teen anthems in history. Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come As You Are, and Lithium have such a raw power one hopes they will never die.
The Stiff Little Fingers emerged at a time when their country, Ireland, was in extreme social and political strife, and gave the youth some hope. The Sex Pistols may have talked to the 'disillusioned youth', but the Stiff Little Fingers were the war-torn Irish youths mouthpiece to speak directly to the oppressive government. They made the people aware of where they stood and that they had the right to fight back.
The Presidents of the United States of America were one of the most creative bands to ever emerge on the alternative scene. Their sound was so different and unique compared to anything anyone had ever heard - their fans will always mourn the fact they only produced two albums.
Me First & The Gimme Gimmes were formed from the leading musicians in the punk scene. Members from some of the greatest bands around joined together to form one super-band, and their unique take on old classics always sticks in your head. For sheer fun, you can't beat the Gimme Gimmes...
AC/DC is the ultimate Australian band. If you want Australian rock, you simply can't go past them! The only band that possibly surpasses AC/DC on the Australian scale is The Wiggles...and for musicianship you can't beat good 'ole Angus on guitar...
U2 have a broad, enduring appeal the world over. Their album sales I believe are among the highest of any band in history, if not the highest, but don't quote me on that. On top of this, they are great humanitarians, giving vast amounts to charity, and writing timeless songs of human beauty.
There has been and most likely never will be anything quite like the Sex Pistols. The raw energy, the pure malice, the rage they inspired in British youth...and the fear they inspired in the ruling class. Never has any band ever had such an effect on its country in such a short amount of time. The Sex Pistols were a pure social phenomenon, and their fans endure...
Anyway if you can think of any other ways of judging a band's worth, please tell me as well...
